brydon, that almost sounds like the OEM ECU is learning and undoing whatever fueling changes you're trying to make. To confirm this, I would try resetting the ECU.
Remember, most other piggybacks spoof the ECU inputs such as coolant temp or MAF/MAP voltage, so the OEM ECU thinks the motor needs less fuel. The FIC allows you to modify the fuel pulse directly, but the OEM ECU will still be trying to maintain a certain A/F ratio. If you're not modifying the O2 sensor voltage to keep the ECU happy, it will eventually correct for this by using the short- and long-term fuel trims.

No it's just the AEM. Even on a zero map it does the same thing. With the jumper plug plugged in it goes away instantly. Tuning is fine. The AEM just eventually craps out.

That does begin to sound like a hardware problem, possibly heat or vibration related. Please email me (
sborg@aempower.com
) and we'll see what we can do.

We also have a Subaru's with a bad miss all the ways form 600 rpms up. It would seem when scoping the input and output from the f/ic that the clipped out put wave form is not being accepted by the OEM ecu.
Also the amplitude is much lower on the output making it hard for the OEM to think it has a stock sensor.
Has anybody got a Subaru with mag sensors working ?

Anyone got this figured out yet? I have been looking at this controller and was considering getting one in the spring.

Hi. I've just finished reading all 5 pages. I have definitely found this thread informative.
I'd love to know if there has been any new developments with this. Reason being, I have a 2002 WRX, with a ton of mods, that's getting very close to completion. I use the stock ECU with Enginuity Open Source flashing, but need more, such as the I/FC. I'm 95% ready to buy, but wanted to ensure I won't have issues, as Brydon has had. Is this still an outstanding problem?
Thanks in advance.

Brydon's FIC is here at AEM, and we are testing it to try and reproduce a failure. I will post the results here when I have them.

Awesome.
Thanks for the update. Please do let us know if anything is derived from this. I'm only waiting on A: FI/C, B: EMS. I'd hoping for "A", first. If all else fails, I'll go for the more expensive EMS. But, I definitely opt for the 'piggyback' in order to retain the "drivability" of the OE ECU control.
I'd love to put the FI/C on my WRX!

Similar to the problem I'm having. Jumper installed works great. F/IC installed it runs but very rough.
One thing I noticed was the jumper plug is a much tighter fit than when the harness is installed in the F/IC. The pins in the jumper harness look like they're larger too. I could move the harness around and see signals drop out and come back in on the gauges screen. If I held the harness just right the car ran great.

) ive read all the posts in this thread and im waiting to see if the issues with the RS are figured out. i would love to swap out my emanage blue for the F/IC if someone can prove it will work flawlessly. keep us updated on the developments, and hopefully the issues will be solved so i can have confidence in purchasing the F/IC

Well a little update:
Like was said earlier my FIC is back at AEM. They found a problem with the output shutting off just like I'm seeing. But they reproduced it on the test bench. They are not sure of the problem but are replacing it with another box. AEM is actually sending me the 30-1911 FIC box that creates a higher voltage output signal instead of the 5 volt that the other box does. I'm pretty sure both would work but this is a signal closer to stock.
Hope to get the box back by the end of the week and test it out. Oh, I forgot to ask for some extra wires UEGO but I will figure something else.

Thanks for the update, brydon. My WRX build will be finished this week, if all goes well, so my last piece of the puzzle will be either an EMS of some type, or the (preferable) FI/C on top of my current Enginuity OpenSource management.

Oh, I was going to say. My other car uses a full 04 WRX harness although it is an older impreza. It was a STI shortblock with wrx heads and a gt35r. I run the AEM EMS on that and LOVE it. I daily drove it and it would start perfectly in every weather condition that we have here in Oregon. It was even smoother running then the factory ecu. If you have the money I would seriously consider going with the AEM EMS. Best money I ever spent. Infact it was the reason when I bought my RS that I wanted to use the AEM FIC.
Now the AEM EMS car runs a fully built block and heads and a gt40r. Idle is strong and the car runs smooth. So it is good for stock to built. Gives you alot of room to upgrade.

Sweet. Yeah, a good friend of mine owns a Subaru-oriented speed shop, here in Virginia. He's who has been trying to talk me into going AEM EMS. I really want to, but I'm already about $7K deep in my engine-build, and another $2K is hard to get past the wife!
