How to Setup Base Timing
http://videos.streetfire.net/video/AEM-EMS-Set-Base-Ignition_727975.htmThe Car: 1991 Mitsubishi Galant VR4, this is the same as a 1st gen DSM.
This is specific to Turbo Applications and Built Motors.
I am only posting this up because I have not been able to find anything online. So I am posting what I am using as my guidelines. Please fill in more info, because I do not have all the tuning knowlege

.
California has a Summer and a Winter blend of gas, I dont know what the difference is but once I find out I will post up the info. So remember that the gas can and will change. You need to check your logs every once and a while to make sure that your car is still running the way you expected it to.
Pump Gas (91oct Cali)AFR: 10.8-11.2 (10.8 is safe)
Timing: 10 degrees at peek torque, 15 degrees at Redline
Very Hot Temps Timing: 0-2 degrees at peek torque, 8-10 degrees at Redline(120+ degree intake temps)
Boost: 25-28psi
Knock: Less than 2.5 volts
Q16 or C16*** Q16 requires 4-6% more fuel over your C16 tune ***
Q16 or C16 - Low Boost
AFR: 12.5
Timing: 22-25 degrees
Boost: 30psi or less
Knock: Less than 3.0 volts
Q16 or C16 - Medium BoostAFR: 12.0-12.5
Timing: 18-22 degrees
Boost: 30-35psi
Knock: Less than 2.6 volts
Q16 or C16 - High BoostAFR: 12.5(30psi)-11.5(45psi)
Timing: 12-18 degrees
Boost: 30-45psi
Knock: Less than 2.3 volts
*** The reason for less volts on knock with more boost is, when knock happens at 45psi, stuff breaks quicker, so put in some extra buffer. You can remove all of that buffer but these are the guidelines that I am using.
After Peek torque you should increase timming a few degrees by redline, be very careful when doing this. Keep a close eye on that knock.

Make sure you have AEM Pro closed before doing this.
I have attached my templates file so that you can just unzip my templates and use them on AEM Pro. To do this you will need to first make a backup of your templates DIR(C:\Program Files\AEM\AEMPro\Templates), just take everything in that folder and highlight all of it. Then Right click and Select SEND TO, and Compressed ZIP. This will create a backup just incase. Then you simply unzip the the files from the Templates.zip attached to this thread, and place the file in (C:\Program Files\AEM\AEMPro\Templates). It will ask you if you would like to overwite the existing file, just say YES.

*** BEFORE YOU START TUNING YOUR CAR DO THIS ***
*** BEFORE YOU START TUNING YOUR CAR DO THIS ***
*** BEFORE YOU START TUNING YOUR CAR DO THIS ***1. Check your Oil.
2. Verify you have Oil

.
3. Check Coolent Level and Overflow
4. Make sure that all sensors are configured properly in the EMS
5. Make sure all your lug nuts are tight, I know it sounds funny but after a night of working on your car it is easy to forget.
6. Make a test run not in boost to make sure that everything sounds fine, come back and do a once over again.
Basic Tuning for AFR:*** Always start out rich, you can always take fuel out. ***
*** If you dont know how much fuel to run, put more in. ***
1. Set Boost Pressure at its Lowest possible setting.
2. Verify that everyting looks good and engine is running properly
3. Hit F6 to start logging
4. Do a third gear pull, watching your AFR, if it goes lean let off the gas.
a. Car went lean, add more fuel
b. re-run the 3gear pull with more fuel
5. Pull over
6. Open the log file
7. Look at your AFR and ADD or REMOVE
8. Check the KNOCK if it was making noise and your AFR's were within limit, pull timing.
a. Remove 1-2 degrees of timing before and where the knock
9. Repeat until you are happy with the results.
10. Turn the boost up and repeat steps 2-9
Basic Tuning for Timing*** START WITH LOWER TIMING, you can always add more ***
1. Set Boost Pressure at its Lowest possible setting.
2. Verify that everyting looks good and engine is running properly
3. Hit F6 to start logging
4. Do a third gear pull
5. Pull over
6. Open the log file
7. Look at your KNOCK and ADD or REMOVE timing
9. Repeat until you are happy with the results.
10. Turn the boost up and repeat steps 2-9
Also dont forget to do a 0psi, and a super low boost tune. This way you can guestimate the stuff inbetween. To do 0psi, just get on the freeway, and hold the car in 3rd gear and stay a 0psi while logging. You dont have to go all teh way to redline, just about 6k or so. I also ran a 5psi run the same way to get it dialed in, because whenyou are going uphill you will more than likley be at 1-2 psi even on a big turbo.
I hope this helps, if anyone has any comments or thinks I should adjust this, just let me know. I am just trying to provide some helpful info for all the street tuners out there.
