Where are the base cals?

Hi there,

my name is Christian and I have a Supra JZA80 Twinturbo, manual transmission, european model.

Here are some of the most important modifications on the engine:

Stock twin turbo chargers removed and one single turbo charger installed
Injectors Blitz/Denso 850cc (high impedence)
resistor box removed
MAF removed - AEM 5 Bar Map sensor and AEM air intake sensor installed

I use AEMTuner v0.99c Build 100204 and the start-up calibration files 01v11 from this forum (Fuel Map and MAP sensor changed with the Wizard).

Now here is the problem:
Whenever I try to start the engine there is no signal from the series 2 ECU to the igniter box. I checked this with an oscilloscope, there is no signal pulse during cranking, when starting the engine.
I tried to plug in the stock ECU, to check error codes and to see what happens. When I try to start the engine it immediately produces spark. The engine does not fire up right with the stock ECU, because MAF is missing and it can not do fuel injection right, because the injectors are to big. The only error code, that comes up with the stock ECU is due to missing MAF.
When I look into the AEM Tuner Software I see that all the sensors work right. MAP sensor shows the right readings and the air intake sensor is working right too.
I already checked the crank teeth and the crank sensor, these parts are ok and working right.

This makes me see that there must be something wrong with the software of the AEM Ecu. I would be very happy if someone could give me a hint to be able to figure out the problem. Maybe there is one little setting in the software that has to be done. Please help.

Hi Christian,
is the Parameter "Stat Sync´d" going on during cranking? ( you will find it in the "Start" template )
If not, thats your problem. If it is off, there are NO signals going to Igniter or Injectors.

If it doesnt sync, there is maybe an problem with the Sensors for cam / crank.

Hi Steffen,

thanks for your reply. I can not see if it is going to "Stat Sync'd" on during cranking. Whenever I try to start the engine the laptop looses connection to the AEM EMS. Every time I have to close the Tuner Software and connect it again to the unit.
I think this is a driver issue of the USB port, I am running Vista on the Laptop.

I checked all the three sensors (crank and cam) before. The resistance that I measured for the sensors is according to the specification. I checked the wires to the ECU as well with 12V, looking fine. I found no break in the wires. The stock ECU did not record an error code refering to the cam or crank sensors.

How can I check if there is a problem with the cam or crank sensors in combination with the AEM EMS? Does anyone know if the pin-layout of the european ECU is same as with the american Supras?

Thanks again for your help.

Kind regards Christian

Hi Christian,
Yes, the USDM and Euro spec have almost the same wiring except a few unused pins ( as long as you use the AEM )
I am working with an EDM MKIV right now, so i can tell you a few hickups.

The problem with the disconnect is well known when using the USB port ( I already mentioned that to AEM )
I believe it is the Serial to USB Chip inside the EMS which will be disconnected during cranking.

Do yourself a favor an get an HAMA USB to serial Adapter at Mediamarkt. Install the adapter as Administrator onto your Laptop and also the AEMTuner. Then connect by using the serial Port of the EMS ( choose SERIAL as preferred connection for the USB-Serial adapter ) . This port will always work, also during cranking.

from your mail address, i believe you are here in Germany. Contact me by E_Mail, so i can send you my Number to call me by Phone.
Its much faster this way.

Just-Solutions.

By the way, did you bought the Turbo, Injectors and the EMS "preprogrammed" cheap from an Company in the States as an Package ( PT Turbo, Manifold, Piping.... and so on )
Same on the MKIV i am working on right now. The EMS " preprogrammed " was in fact an AEM supplied Base map which comes with the AEM Tuner Software.

Hi Steffen,

thanks for your help, you receive my email message shortly.

I already have an USB to Serial Adapter, I will try that one, thanks.

I did not buy all the tuning parts from one source in one box. I choose all my tuning parts by myself and negotiate the pricing. So there was no cheap box as a bundle.

Kind regards Christian
