Ign Problem

I cant seem to get my Rb26 running.
Seems to me its just the ign timing that needs to be fiddled with. i have never done it before and being a student i dont exactly have the money to take it to a tuner.
on my "ign" tab, the ignition timing is at 15 degrees, when i open the ign sync wizard, and change the BTDC number to 20-22*, i get backfires out of the exhaust.
can anyone explain some way to get this thing running? I swapped the disc to the one supplied by AEM and changed the settings in the startup wizard. I am getting spark and fuel. I am pretty tech savvy, just never done ign timing before.
thanks for any help.

I'll try to explain what I do for RB26 motors on that first start up. Your going to need a timing light, and a person to assist you, a crank pulley with 360 timing marks doesnt hurt either but the stock one with its marks are fine. When you go to the timing wizard lock your timing at 20 BTDC, make it so your timing light inductive loop gets its signal from the #1 coil. I dont use the stock loop on the back of the motor as I have seen that give errors in excess of 20 degrees. Now as your friend cranks the motor run the timing light and advance or retard the sync adjustment as required to get your timing marks to match. Once its done you should no longer get the rough popping sound and it should sound like a normal cranking motor

it works so much better if you remove all spark plugs, ground spark plug #1 on the valve cover somewhere so you get an arc for the light, crank at WOT so injection is off, and put the timing light at 0 and lock your timing at 0 in the software. The the light matches the reference point, unlock your timing put everything back and it will start right up (if fuel is correct)
I prefer 0 because mose timng advance lights will display half your actual timing on wasted spark applications like the rb26
